The Open DAW was established as a registered charity on June 6th. 2005.
Dawlish Community Information Centre seemed a bit too long a title so we held a community competition. The winning entry was 'The Open DAW' standing for:
D = Dawlish A=Agencies W= Social Welfare aspect of our work
At the Open DAW we aim to:
- act as a signpost to community information, agencies, organisations and events
- provide a free 'drop in' facility for people to meet agency representatives who can help them
- facilitate and promote appropriate community projects in welfare, social and community information
- provide a safe haven and friendly face for the disadvantaged and lonely.
On entering the building you can enjoy our refreshments or pause at the notices to look at 'what's on' locally. If you would like to, you can sit down and consult with Angie, our Coordinator. She will not give you advice, but point you to information or an agency which can provide the professional help you require. If an agency representative is present then they can provide advice and you don't need to make an appointment. It is a simple "drop-in" system.
In 2012 Open DAW was awarded a CERTIFICATE of EXCELLENCE by Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Community Watch.
The Open Daw is not funded by any government or council grant and is therefore independent, relying on fund raising, donations, sales of books and our Friends Scheme. If you would like to help us, please read our page on 'How to support Open DAW'.
